It’s Never Too Early
Kathleen Reif, St. Mary's (MD) County Library Director, and Stephanie Shauck, Maryland Youth Services Coordinator, Division of Library Development & Services, discuss the culture change from the late 1990s when librarians began to apply their knowledge of emergent literacy best practices in storytimes and to focus on adult caregivers in addition to the children. Elaine Czarnecki and Gilda Martinez, who at the time were with the Johns Hopkins Center for Reading Excellence, began working with Maryland public libraries in 2000. Kathleen and Stephanie also discuss several county library projects and the statewide promotional campaign called It’s Never Too Early.

How Funding Plays a Role in MD Birth to Five Initiatives, including Storyville

They describe how several counties received Local Management Board funding for birth to five projects. They highlight the success of Storyville in Baltimore County.
